History of Henty Riding Club
On Thursday 22nd March 1979 a
meeting was held at Sheila Edwards to form a Riding Club. In
attendance were Sheila Edwards, Olga Green, Toni Hughan and
Bev Edwards.
The aim of the Club; was “Safety and Happiness for Horse
and Rider”. Fees:
$ 5.00 Family membership, $ 2.00 Single membership
plus horse water bucket. Basic Requirements
- Rider: Suitable riding boots, riding hat, wet weather
gear, lunch and cup. Horse: Halter and rope to tether
horse, saddle and bridle and water bucket with name on
it.
Henty commenced Sunday 1st April 1979 and thereafter the
fourth Sunday in every month. Membership started with 43
members in 1979 and increased to 66 members in 1985 and then
down to 14 members in 1993. In the
early years of the club, Graeme and Bev Edwards front paddock
in Burekup was used for Pony Club type meetings and a shed was
erected in 1980. Trail rides were organised around the
district.
Each year a camp was held and
these were at Lake Preston and Wellington Mills. Henty
Riding Club applied for a grant in 1988 for $ 272 to fence a
portion of land next to Wellington Mills cottages to keep the
horses from escaping while on camp. In 1983, with the
assistance of Young and Young, a constitution was drawn up and
Henty Riding Club became incorporated on 8th November 1983.
Between 1993 and 1996 the club was in recess but a meeting was
held at the Don Hewison Centre on the 18th June 1996 to
discuss the formation of an Adult Pleasure Riding Club and
this was the beginning of the Henty Riding Club as we know it
today, based at the Dardanup Equestrian Centre.
As you can see Henty Riding
Club has evolved over the years and changed to suit the needs
of the members at the time. We like to cater for any riding
disciplines and any members are welcome to organize events
that interest them. The committee is available to assist. At
present we have an active group that organizes mainly dressage
clinics and events, assists with the running of the
Showjumping at the Bunbury Show, runs mid week active days at
the Dardanup Equestrian Centre, Steve Brady Clinics, Pilates
clinics, Dentist visits etc.
If you would like to have different types of days please
contact your committee and get involved and as long as
“Safety and Happiness for Horse and Rider” is
maintained anything is possible.
